Mel Gibson was uninjured in a Los Angeles car accident the night of August 15, 2010 after he crashed his 2008 Maserati into a Malibu hillside. According to a CNN report, the crash occurred on Malibu Canyon Road. California Highway Patrol officials are saying that the crash was "non-intentional" and that alcohol or drugs were not factors. Officials say Gibson steered his car to the right and struck the rocky hillside.
They say that driving on Malibu Canyon Road is tricky and that at the location where this crash occurred, "it could have happened to anybody." Officials are also saying that Gibson was not being pursued by paparazzi at the time. Gibson has been more in the news these days because he is embroiled in a bitter child custody dispute with his ex-girlfriend.
Car Accident Statistics
According to California Highway Patrol's 2008 Statewide Integrated Traffic Records System (SWITRS), there were two fatalities and 134 injuries involving car accidents in Malibu, California. In Los Angeles County as a whole 667 deaths and 52,229 personal injuries were reported as a result of car accidents during the same year.
Accident Causes
Based on this news report, preliminary investigations suggest that this was not a DUI collision. It is a relief to hear that no one was injured in this crash. I trust officials have looked into how or why this crash occurred. Was there some type of vehicle defect or malfunction in Gibson's vehicle? Was he run off the roadway by another car? Was he speeding or distracted at the time? Did he swerve in order to avoid debris on the freeway? Was there a dangerous condition on the roadway, which may have caused or contributed to this crash?
Four years ago, Gibson was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence in Malibu. At the time, the actor was in the news for getting into a fight with Los Angeles Sheriff's deputies and making anti-Semitic statements. Gibson was given three years probation after entering a no-contest plea in that case. CHP officials said Gibson behaved "like a gentleman" after Sunday's crash.
