Maribel Corona, 34, was killed in a car accident in Los Angeles the morning of October 18, 2009 after the driver of the car she was a passenger in, lost control of the vehicle and landed down on an embankment off the 210 Freeway in the Mission Hills area. According to a news report in the Los Angeles Daily News, Corona was struck by a guardrail after the driver of the 2003 BMW, 39-year-old Estevan Regalado, crashed the car. California Highway Patrol officials say Regalado was traveling at a high rate of speed and that the car drifted toward the left, hit a raised beam and then the steel guard rail. The guard rail went into the passenger side of the car and struck Corona. Regalado was arrested. Corona was transported to an area hospital where she was pronounced dead.

My heart goes out to the family and friends of Maribel Corona for their tragic, heartbreaking and untimely loss. I offer my sincere condolences to everyone who knew and loved this woman. Please keep them in your prayers.

Car Accidents in Los Angeles

According to California Highway Patrol's 2007 Statewide Integrated Traffic Records System (SWITRS), there were 260 deaths and 27,110 injuries involving car accidents in the city of Los Angeles. In Los Angeles County as a whole, 712 deaths and 56,475 injuries were reported as a result of car accidents in 2007.

Traffic investigators in this case are saying that the driver of the BMW was traveling at a high and unsafe rate of speed, which may have caused this accident. However, if I were a member of the victim's family, I would also want to know whether other factors may have played a part in this fatal car accident.

Car Accident Causes and Liability Issues

Here are some of the questions that need to be asked in any serious car accident. Was there a vehicle defect or a mechanical malfunction that caused the driver to lose control of the car? Was this driver intoxicated or driving recklessly or negligently? Was there a dangerous condition on the roadway, which caused the accident and the serious injuries? Was any other vehicle or vehicles involved -- for example, was the car run off the road by another vehicle? Very often in traffic accident cases, not all the facts come out during a preliminary investigation. In fact, sometimes, preliminary determinations tend to be inaccurate.
