OC/RC, the Huntington Beach-based off-road remote control raceway, will hold a fundraiser for the family of 3-year-old Alex Partalciyan-Elbicer, who was struck and killed by a pickup truck in the OC/RC parking lot on May 28, 2010. The fundraiser for this young pedestrian accident victim will be held 7 p.m. Friday, June 4, 2010, at OC/RC Raceway and Hobbies, 15282 Jason Circle, in Huntington Beach. For more information about this fundraiser or to make a donation to the family, please call 714-892-6699.

According to Huntington Beach police officials, 19-year-old Alan Hess was driving a Chevy Silverado pickup truck west in the parking lot when little Alex ran in front of the truck. Alex was transported to a nearby hospital where he died.

Robert Black, owner of the OC/RC Raceway, says Alex's father had brought him to the raceway that day to show his son some cars. Black said several members of the family have been his long-time patrons.

"The child's father raced here and came almost every week," he said. "His cousins came too. I guess, that day, he just brought his son to show him the track when it happened. It's a horrible tragedy for the family."

Black said he did not see the fatal car accident but only the horrible aftermath. The family at this time can use all the help and support they can, he says. Friday's fundraiser will feature a silent auction.

"We've had a number of manufacturers donating products for the auction," Black said. "We'll also be giving away remote control cars. So far we've already received $1,000 in donations. All proceeds will go to the family." If you will be in the area, or, if you are interested in attending this event, please call OC/RC for more information.

This incident is a grim reminder to all of us that anything can happen at any time. By all accounts, this incident happened within seconds or within a fraction of a second. I can only imagine the grief the little boy's dad and family members are going through at this time. My heart goes out to everyone who loved little Alex. They will certainly be in my thoughts and prayers.

What are some tips you would offer to parents when they are walking outside with their children?
