Three people, including two pedestrians, were injured in a Los Angeles car accident the evening of December 17, 2009, according to KPCC Radio. The car accident occurred on Sunset Boulevard when a driver struck two pedestrians. One male pedestrian suffered critical head injuries while the other broke a leg. The driver of the vehicle sustained minor injuries. Los Angeles police officials say there is "conflicting information" from witnesses and they may have to subpoena the traffic video from the scene, in order to determine the facts of this case. The pedestrian accident occurred at the 6400 block of Sunset Boulevard near Cahuenga Boulevard.
My heart goes out to the seriously injured pedestrian in this crash as well as the others who were injured. I wish them the very best for a speedy and complete recovery. Please keep these injured victims in your prayers.
Pedestrian Accidents in Los Angeles
According to California Highway Patrol's 2007 Statewide Integrated Traffic Records System (SWITRS) there were 90 fatalities and 2,690 injuries involving pedestrian accidents in Los Angeles. Countywide, 210 deaths and 5,095 injuries were reported in 2007 as a result of pedestrian accidents. Also, car accidents in Los Angeles County claimed 712 lives and injured 56,475 people during the same year.
Who Caused this Collision?
Based on this news report, there is no information on where the pedestrians were, when the vehicle hit them. I trust that is what investigators are also trying to determine at this point. Were the pedestrians walking in a crosswalk or at an intersection? Was the driver of the vehicle driving erratically or recklessly? Was he under the influence or distracted at the time of the accident? Who had the right-of-way at the time of the collision?
An Experienced Injury Lawyer Can Help
If officials determine that this accident was the driver's fault then he could be held responsible for the accident and resulting injuries. The injured pedestrians could claim compensation to cover medical expenses, loss of earnings, cost of hospitalization, physical therapy and other related damages. If there was a dangerous condition on the roadway, which may have caused or contributed to this injury crash, then the city or governmental agency responsible for maintaining that roadway could also be held liable. Any claim in California, against a governmental agency must be filed within 180 days of the accident or injuries. An experienced Los Angeles personal injury lawyer will be able to guide victims and their families through this complex process, help protect their legal rights and secure the compensation they rightfully deserve.
