Three people were injured in a Los Angeles car accident involving a Metro bus and another vehicle the morning of April 5, 2010, in Northridge. According to a Fox news report, the injury collision occurred in the 17900 block of West Lassen Street. The MTA bus driver and a passenger sustained minor injuries while the driver of the other vehicle suffered critical injuries. Police are still investigating the circumstances of this crash.
My heart goes out to the critically injured victim of this car accident. I sincerely hope this person recovers quickly and completely from his or her injuries. I also, wish the bus driver and passenger the very best for a speedy recovery.
Los Angeles Accident Statistics
According to California Highway Patrol's 2008 Statewide Integrated Traffic Records System (SWITRS), there were 268 fatalities and 25,588 injuries involving car accidents in Los Angeles. Countywide, 667 people died and 52,229 were injured as a result of car accidents during the same year.
Fault and Liability Issues
Based on this news report, it is not clear exactly how or why this bus accident occurred. There are more questions than answers at this point. Who was at fault here? Did the bus rear end the other vehicle? Did one of the vehicles make an unsafe maneuver? Was there a dangerous condition on the roadway that caused or contributed to this collision? Did one of the vehicles fail to yield right-of-way? Was the bus driver impaired, distracted, inattentive or otherwise negligent? I trust officials are examining these and other issues in order to determine precisely what happened here.
If the bus driver was at fault for this accident, not only the driver, but also MTA can be held liable for the victim's critical injuries. Any claim involving a California governmental agency must be properly filed within six months of the accident or injury.
