A motorcyclist was hospitalized with injuries after an Orange County car accident the morning of January 15, 2010. According to a news report in The Orange County Register, the crash involved the motorcycle, a GMC van and a Toyota Prius on the southbound 5 Freeway just before the 55 connector in Santa Ana. Investigators are still looking into the cause of this injury crash. No one else was reported injured.

My heart goes out to this motorcyclist who was injured in this accident. I hope and pray that his injuries were not major or catastrophic. I wish him the very best for a quick and complete recovery.

Motorcycle Accident Statistics

According to California Highway Patrol's 2007 Statewide Integrated Traffic Records System (SWITRS), there were five fatalities and 37 injuries involving motorcycle accidents in Santa Ana. Countywide, 24 deaths and 752 injuries were reported as a result of motorcycle accidents in 2007.

What Caused this Injury Crash?

Based on this news report, it's not clear how or why this accident occurred. It is of course, possible this accident was the result of a driving error committed by the motorcycle rider. However, if I were a family member of the injured victim, I would want to make sure that this collision was not caused by someone else's negligence– specifically by one of the other drivers.

There are still many questions here that need to be answered. How did the collision occur? Who struck whom? Was one of the drivers impaired or distracted at the time? Was one of the drivers speeding, reckless or negligent in any other way? If one of the other drivers is found to have been negligent, he or she could be held liable for the motorcyclist's injuries. In such cases, victims may seek compensation to cover medical expenses, lost earnings, cost of hospitalization and other related damages.
