A cyclist was seriously injured in a Portland car accident over the weekend. The Oregonian reported that the car accident took place on Sept. 18 in Southwest Portland.

A witness said he saw the cyclist riding south in the bike lane on Southwest Terwilliger Boulevard just before 8 a.m. A van then crossed on Southwest Lobelia Street into the cyclist's path, leading to the car crash.

The cyclist, who was wearing a helmet, collided with the van's rear passenger side and witnesses said the man's head got stuck inside the back side window.

The man was rushed to the hospital and police are investigating the car accident.

First of all, I'm thankful that the bike accident didn't result in any fatalities. I join the cyclist's friends and families in praying for his speedy recovery.

Based on The Oregonian's report, I also understand that residents have complained before that auto accidents frequently happen at the intersection where the bike crash took place. I understand that the van's driver was cooperating with the police and I'm glad that at least the accident didn't turn into a hit-and-run.

Majority of Bicycle Accidents Result In Serious Personal Injuries

According to the Oregon Department of Transportation, there were 265 crashes involving bicycles in Portland in 2008. Out of this number, 255 resulted in serious personal injuries. It's important to note though that many bicycle safety advocates believe that bike accident statistics are often underreported as police, in many cases, neglect to report a crash unless it has resulted in significant injuries or property damage.
