The California dog bite lawyers at BISNAR | CHASE have maintained that pit bulls and rottweilers are dangerous breeds of dogs that are more likely to attack unprovoked than other breeds of dogs. A recent news report in The Orange County Register gives an account of Orange County Sheriff's deputies shooting and killing a pit bull that attacked them while they were serving a search warrant in Anaheim, California. Two deputies were doing a parole search in an unincorporated part of the city when the dog was inadvertently released from a bedroom. The pit bull lunged toward the deputies and one of then fired at least once killing the dog. The deputies did not report any injuries.

It is indeed fortunate that these deputies who were in the process of doing their jobs were not injured as a result of this dog attack.

Dog Bite Statistics

According to studies conducted in 2007 by the national organization, Dogsbite.org, the combination of pit bulls, rottweilers and wolf hybrids cause 77 percent of attacks that induce bodily harm. Also, 73 percent of these attacks involve children, 70 percent result in fatalities and 77 percent result in maiming.

Dog bites can and do result in extremely devastating injuries. Those who are seriously injured by dog bites end up spending hundreds of thousands of dollars on treatment and cosmetic surgery. In many cases, especially those involving children, the physical scars are permanent. The emotional scarring or trauma that takes place during a dog attack can also stay with a person for a very long time. Many of my clients talk about nightmares and heightened anxiety they experience after their dog attack episode.

Dog Bite Liability Issues

Breed bans are not allowed under California law. But several municipalities and counties are introducing laws and amending old ones to tighten the leash on dog owners, especially those who own these dangerous breeds of dogs. In my opinion, it is very important that city codes require all dog owners to carry liability insurance. This helps reimburse victims for medical expenses, cost of medication, surgery, psychological counseling and therapy and other related expenses. A majority of these dog bite incidents occur because of a dog owner's negligence. An innocent dog bite injury victim should not have to pay for someone else's negligence.
