A woman has been seriously injured in a Los Angeles car accident after her vehicle collided head-on with another car. The San Gabriel Valley Tribune reports that the injured woman was a passenger in a black Chevy Cavalier, which collided with a Nissan Maxima on East Cypress Street near North Kidder Avenue, in Covina, the morning of December 22, 2009. Covina police officials said the Chevy Cavalier was traveling at about 35 mph, when the Maxima's driver made a left turn on to Kidder Avenue and collided with the Cavalier. The passenger in the Chevy sustained head injuries and was transported to an area hospital. The Cavalier's driver was treated for a minor cut at the hospital. The Maxima's driver sustained minor injuries. No other injuries were reported.

I sympathize with this injured victim. I hope she did not sustain catastrophic head injuries. The news report says she was going in and out of consciousness after the accident. I hope and pray that her head injuries were not major and that she makes a speedy and complete recovery. This injured victim and her family will certainly be in my prayers.

California Car Accident Laws

If the details of this news report are accurate, this accident occurred at the intersection of Cypress and Kidder as the driver of the Maxima was trying to make a left turn. California law is very specific about the requirements for drivers making a left turn or a U-turn.

California Vehicle Code Section 21801 (a) states: "The driver of a vehicle intending to turn to the left or to complete a U-turn upon a highway, or to turn left into public or private property, or an alley, shall yield the right-of-way to all vehicles approaching from the opposite direction which are close enough to constitute a hazard at any time during the turning movement, and shall continue to yield the right-of-way to the approaching vehicles until the left turn or U-turn can be made with reasonable safety."

Liability Issues in Car Accidents

I trust investigators in this case are looking into who had the light and the right-of-way at that intersection, at the time of this collision. If the driver of the Nissan Maxima is found to be at-fault, he or she could be held liable for the woman's serious injuries. An experienced Los Angeles personal injury attorney will be able to guide this victim and her family through the complex legal process of recovering compensation, ensure the protection of their legal rights, and also, get fair compensation for the victim's injuries, damages and loss.
