Carlos Perez, 59, was fatally injured in a Los Angeles car accident after he was struck and dragged several feet by a vehicle, which then drove away from the scene. The fatal car accident occurred early morning on March 29, 2010, when Perez was crossing the road to get to his early morning shift at a Los Angeles produce company. A dark colored 2005 or 2006 Infiniti G 35 sedan apparently hit him as he was near the middle of the roadway.
The car struck this pedestrian accident victim with such an impact that it scattered pieces of glass and broken lights and even, ripped the car's skirting. The driver did not even apply the brakes or stop to help Perez. Anyone with information about this hit-and-run driver or vehicle, which must have sustained quite a bit of damage, is asked to call LAPD detectives at 213-972-1825, or call our hotline at 800-6-Hit-N-Run (800-644-8678).
My heart goes out to Carlos Perez's family. What a devastating blow for them! By all accounts, Carlos Perez was a beloved father, husband and grandfather who, just before the day he died, barbecued and took his family to Disneyland. Tragic! I offer my heartfelt condolences to the Perez family, and everyone who knew and loved Carlos Perez. I truly hope that the hit-and-run driver will soon be apprehended and brought to justice. The Perez family deserves justice and closure. They will certainly be in my thoughts and prayers.
Los Angeles Pedestrian Accidents
According to California Highway Patrol's 2008 Statewide Integrated Traffic Records System (SWITRS), there were 104 fatalities and 2,716 injuries involving pedestrian accidents in Los Angeles. Countywide, 214 people died and 4,985 were injured as a result of pedestrian accidents during that year.
Hit-and-Run is a Crime
Leaving the scene of an accident is a criminal act. Motorists who are involved in car accidents are required to stop at the scene, remain until authorities arrive, exchange information and administer aid to the injured victim. The suspect in this case did none of the above. California Vehicle Code 20001 (a) states: “The driver of a vehicle involved in an accident resulting in injury to a person, other than himself or herself, or in the death of a person shall immediately stop the vehicle at the scene of the accident.”
Liability Issues
The families of deceased or injured victims would be well-advised to seek the advise of an experienced Los Angeles personal injury lawyer who will stay on top of the official investigation and make sure that their rights are protected. If the accident was caused by a dangerous or defective roadway, the governmental agency or the city responsible for maintaining that roadway could also be held liable. Under California Government Code section 911.2, any claim against a governmental entity must be properly filed within six months of the accident or injury. A knowledgeable car accident lawyer will also advise families about how their own car insurance policy applies to a hit-and-run collision or an incident where the at-fault driver is uninsured or underinsured.
