Shih-saing Ho, 78, was killed in a Los Angeles car accident after he was struck by a vehicle while riding in his motorized wheelchair. According to a news report in the Pasadena Star News, Ho was on 6th Street, in Alhambra, the afternoon of December 1, 2009, when he was struck from behind and then run over. The driver of the vehicle did not stop at the scene of the crash. Ho was discovered lying on the 6th Street underpass at Ramona Road and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police Seeking Hit-and-Run Driver

Alhambra police are saying that the vehicle, which hit Ho probably has minor to moderate collision damage to the front end passenger side. Police are asking for the public's help in finding the hit-and-run driver. If you saw this tragic accident or have any information about the suspect vehicle or driver, please contact Alhambra police at 626-570-5151.

I offer my deepest sympathies and condolences to Shih-saing Ho's family and friends for their tragic and heartbreaking loss. Please keep them in your prayers.

California Vehicle Code 467(a) defines motorized wheelchair users as pedestrians, with all of the same rights and restrictions as someone walking along a roadway. That means vehicles are required to yield to them, and that the wheelchair users are to stick to sidewalks or shoulders and crosswalks.

Hit-and-Run is a Serious Crime

Based on this news report, we don't know exactly where Ho was at the time of this fatal pedestrian accident. Irrespective of whose fault this accident was, the driver of the vehicle in this case, faces felony hit-and-run charges because he fled the scene of the accident. I would certainly find it hard to believe that the driver wasn't aware of what he or she did. Based on the fact that Ho was hit from behind, this driver saw Ho getting hit, then ran him over and then took off. I trust this driver will soon be apprehended and brought to justice.

Ho's family may also want to consult with an experienced Los Angeles personal injury lawyer, who will keep up with the official investigation and make sure that their legal rights and best interests are protected. A skilled car accident lawyer will also be able to look into whether a dangerous roadway condition caused or contributed to this tragic accident. If that was the case, the city or governmental agency responsible for maintaining this roadway could also be held liable. Any claim involving a California governmental entity must be filed within six months of the accident or injury.
