The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission is reissuing a defective product recall involving all convertible Simplicity bassinets after two additional infant deaths since the recall was originally issued in August 2008. According to a news report in the San Francisco Examiner, in one of the incidents, a 2-month-old baby suffocated against the adjustable fabric siding of the bassinet. In another incident, a 6-month-old was entrapped in the bassinet's bar opening. There have apparently also been other reports of babies becoming entrapped in this way. In all, four infants have died in accidents related to these defective products.
Product Defects Cause Serious Personal Injury
All of the recalled bassinets were manufactured before May 18, 2008 and include models with the Graco logo as well as the Winnie the Pooh motifs licensed by Disney Consumer Products. The defective bassinets may be returned to the retailers who have voluntarily agreed to provide a refund or store credit after Simplicity became defunct. Consumers, who believe, they own one of these products, are requested to stop using them immediately.
My heart goes out to the family of the two infants who died as a result of this defective product. I offer my deepest condolences to the parents of these children. Please keep them in your prayers.
Over the last year, more than 1 million Simplicity cribs and bassinets have been recalled for similar product defects. Several children – infants and toddlers – have suffered serious personal injury as a result of these defective cribs and bassinets. Most of the defects involving the cribs have to do with the drop side detaching and creating an entrapment hazard for the children. Product liability lawsuits have been piling up against the company.
Importance of Quality Control
Simplicity products are an example of how a total breakdown in quality control can adversely affect an entire company and more importantly, millions of consumers. The tragedies caused by these dangerous and defective products should never be forgotten. This is a lesson not only for product manufacturers, but also for our federal officials, who are still struggling with enforcement of federal safety standards when it comes to imported products. If you or a loved one has been seriously injured or killed as a result of a defective product, specifically these Simplicity products, please consult an experienced California personal injury lawyer, who can give you more information about your legal rights and options.
