Christin Hill, 23, a pregnant woman was seriously injured and miscarried after a Riverside car accident after she lost control of her pickup truck and crashed into a metal light pole in Pedley, California. According to a news report in the San Bernardino Sun, Hill was driving west on Limonite Avenue near Downey Street in a 2003 Chevrolet Silverado the night of October 27, 2009, when she lost control of the vehicle. California Highway Patrol officials said the truck then slammed into a pole, trapping Hill inside. She was taken to an area hospital for treatment of major injuries. Another victim, 24-year-old Joshua Hill, also sustained major injuries. A 1-year-old girl suffered minor injuries. Both Joshua Hill and the toddler were also transported to a local hospital.

My heart goes out to this young woman, Christin Hill, who has apparently suffered traumatic injuries in this car accident. I also wish Joshua Hill and the little girl the very best for a quick and complete recovery from their injuries. It is not clear from the report whether all the victims were related. Please keep them in your prayers.

Riverside Car Accident Statistics

According to California Highway Patrol's 2007 Statewide Integrated Traffic Records System (SWITRS), 144 deaths and 3,248 injuries were reported in unincorporated areas of Riverside County involving car accidents. In Riverside County as a whole, 279 deaths and 9,925 injuries were reported as a result of car accidents in 2007.

Based on this newspaper report, it is not clear how or why Christin Hill lost control of her pickup truck. Was there a vehicle defect or a mechanical malfunction that caused her to crash the Silverado? Was there a dangerous condition on the roadway, which caused Hill to lose control? Was there another vehicle involved -- for example, was the Silverado run off the road by another vehicle? The answers to these questions could help determine who or what should be held liable for this tragic car accident. Of course, there is the possibility that this accident was caused because of driver error.

Liability Issues in Car Accidents

However, if another negligent driver caused this accident, then he or she could be held liable for the accident and resulting injuries. If an auto product defect caused the accident, then the auto maker or the manufacturer of the defective auto part can be held responsible for the victims' injuries. If a dangerous condition on the roadway caused Hill to lose control, the governmental entity in charge of maintaining that roadway could be held liable. Any claim against a governmental entity in California must be filed within six months of the accident or injury.

In such cases, car accident victims would be well-advised to consult with an experienced personal injury attorney in Los Angeles, who will look at all aspects of the incident, determine whether there was any negligence, identify the at-fault parties and hold them responsible. If negligence or wrongdoing is determined, victims can seek compensation to cover medical expenses, pain and suffering, loss of wages and other related damages.
