Bailey E. Sloan, 20, was killed in a San Bernardino car accident the morning of October 24, 2009 after she was struck by a vehicle on the 215 Freeway in Colton. According to a news report in The Press-Enterprise, Sloan's Mercedes Benz had run out of gas and was stopped on the right shoulder of the freeway north of Washington Avenue when a southbound Saturn sedan struck her car. California Highway Patrol officials are investigating this incident.

I offer my deepest sympathies to the family and friends of Bailey Sloan for their tragic and heartbreaking loss. My heart goes out to everyone who knew and loved Sloan. Please keep this young woman's family in your prayers.

Car Accidents in San Bernardino

According to CHP's Statewide Integrated Traffic Records System (SWITRS), car accidents in Colton claimed four lives and caused 352 injuries in Colton, California. In San Bernardino County as a whole, 308 deaths and 9,920 injuries were reported as a result of car accidents in 2007.

Based on this news report, it is not clear why the Saturn sedan struck Sloan's car. There are many questions here that need to be answered. The news account says Sloan's car was parked in the right shoulder of the freeway. Why then, did the Saturn strike her vehicle? It seems to me the driver of the Saturn left the roadway before crashing into the other car. Was this driver distracted, fatigued or was it due to intoxication? Did the driver of the Saturn lose control of his or her vehicle for some reason? The answers to these questions will hopefully shed some light on whether there was any negligence or wrongdoing involved in this accident.

Car Accident Liability Issues

If the driver of the Saturn caused this accident and is determined to be at fault for it, then
he or she could be held liable for Sloan's fatal injuries.
