A 29-year-old woman was injured in a San Diego car accident after she was struck by a teen driver the afternoon of August 2, 2010. According to a news report in The San Diego Union-Tribune, the accident occurred near the intersection of Camino del Norte and Dove Canyon Road in San Diego. The 17-year-old female driver of the SUV apparently lost control of the vehicle and rolled it several times. The SUV struck the bicyclist in the process. Both the driver of the SUV and the bicyclist were transported to a local hospital for treatment of unknown injuries. An investigation is ongoing.
My heart goes out to both the teen and the woman who were injured in this accident. My thoughts are prayers are with them and their families.
San Diego Bicycle Accidents
According to the California Highway Patrol's Statewide Integrated Traffic Records System (SWITRS), three fatalities and 512 injuries occurred in 2008 involving bicycle accidents in San Diego. Countywide, seven people died and 959 were injured as a result of bicycle accidents during the same year.
What Caused This Bicycle Accident?
Based on this news report, it is not clear how or why the initial rollover crash occurred. Was the teen driver traveling too fast? Was she distracted or otherwise negligent at the time? Was there an auto product defect or a design defect in the SUV, which may have caused or contributed to the rollover crash? Was the girl under the influence at the time? Where exactly was the bicyclist riding at the time? Was she crossing the intersection, or riding the bike along the shoulder, or in the bike lane? I trust officials are looking into these and other issues in order to determine the cause of this injury collision.
If the driver of the SUV is determined to have been at fault, then, she could be held liable for this accident and the injuries caused to the bicyclist. In such cases, injured victims could seek compensation to cover medical expenses, loss of wages, cost of hospitalization, rehabilitation, physical therapy and other related damages. It would be in the best interests of victims to consult with an experienced San Diego personal injury lawyer, who will analyze all aspects of the crash and make sure that the negligent parties are held accountable for their actions.
