Man Loses Sense of Smell

According to a recent report on KITV, two more Hawaii residents have filed lawsuits claiming they have lost their sense of smell after using Zicam products. One of the plaintiffs, a 59-year-old man, says he took Zicam two years ago to get rid of a cold, but instead lost his sense of smell within a few weeks. The man says his quality of life has been destroyed and that he cannot smell or properly taste food now. Even a surgery could not fix the problem. In fact, some foods and smells make him uncomfortable, claustrophobic or even sick. For example, eating celery leaves a bad taste and even fresh strawberries taste overly ripe or rotten, for him.

Matrixx has known about its defective products for more than five years now. In fact, the company successfully defended Zicam lawsuits in 2004. Now, however, the pharmaceutical liability lawsuits are piling up, especially after the recall this last summer. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration is saying that at least 800 people have reported loss of smell after using Zicam cold medications. FDA warned consumers that the zinc in Zicam could cause irreversible damage to nerve in the nose.

These reports are examples of how Matrixx, and a lot of other pharmaceutical companies, put drugs on the market without properly researching or testing them. They're in a hurry to put these products out and start raking in the profits.
